Why do independent and small-group practices check the list?

Each business has its own motivations. Some of the most common we hear include:

1. Financial Penalties:
IIf you unknowingly employ or contract with excluded individuals or entities, you may face repayment requirements and fines up to 3x the billed services.

2. Regulatory Requirements:
State and federal laws and statutes generally require you to monitor these lists monthly or periodically.

There are many reasons individuals or entities end up on exclusion lists, including Medicare or Medicaid fraud. Reviewing these lists can help reduce your organization’s unintentional risk exposure.

My practice operates in one state — why would I need to check all state lists?

If a person or organization has been excluded in one state, they may also be excluded nationwide.

Additionally, according to industry experts, up to 50% of exclusions are not included on federal lists such as the OIG LEIE.

To help mitigate your organization’s potential exposure to employee issues, compliance mistakes, repayments, penalties, and fines, it is a good idea to review all state and federal exclusion lists.

How Do I Search the List?

Disclaimer: We cannot provide specific instructions on how to conduct searches or what actions to take if you identify a potential match. We publish and update the list periodically, but it is possible that exclusions could be missed.

The OIG recommends searching their list by last name and first initial. When searching the Cori Master List, it can be helpful to start broadly with just the last name, then narrow your search using initials and the first name.

This approach can be helpful because each state formats its list differently, and starting broad can catch more potential matches. Also, remember to search for any known aliases or variations of names.

What Is the Cori Master Name Field?

Our list combines all name fields for a record (e.g., first, middle, last) into one searchable field that we call the Cori Master Name.

Why We Do This: Each state formats names differently. Some include a full name in one column, while others separate first, last, and middle names. This approach may improve the ease of searching.

What This Means: Searching by full name alone may not produce results if the record is stored differently. You might consider starting with part of the name—such as the last name—and refining your search as needed.

Why Is the List Free?

Not every practice needs Cori’s automation tools, but most still need to check exclusion lists.

Meeting this requirement can take small practices over 8 hours each month to collect and search all their employees and vendors.
